Licensing

Regulation of alarm systems and monitoring has exploded in recent years. It comes at many levels to serve many purposes.

Alarm Installation Company– Professional alarm companies in most states are required to be licensed electrical contractors. In most cases this is done on the state level. For specific requirements check with the state in question.

Alarm System Installer – Some states have extensive apprentice programs as well as continuing education for alarm installers, others have no requirements. For specific requirements check with the state in question.

Alarm Monitoring Company – Few states have specific licensing for alarm monitoring stations. Most larger stations will be certified by UL (Underwriters Laboratory) UL sets standards and inspects for building structure, staffing, computer and software, emergency power and security of building (fire & physical security).

Homeowner – In most states the homeowner can install an alarm system in his home without the need for any licensing.
